While the world sleeps,

she slings her cares across her shoulder

like a long-handled purse and tiptoes into the night.

She has buried her secrets in the bottom of her soul.

No relics of a distant past engraved upon her face,

unspoken hunger drives her to the place

where patches of moss soften the earth

and paradise is called a tree, though she questions

the lingering bitter scent of its leaves.

Every night when the storm screams,

she beseeches the heavens for confidence.

Thunder rips through her ragged bones,

while a low swirling wind invites her to dance.

Her shuddering wanes to gentle swaying.

After all, lightening speaks well of her

even though the stars say nothing at all.

She wonders if the moon is broken

…for it does not shine a path for her.

Still she knows for sure she will never wither

into the grave she once dug for herself.

when the cool winds blow

through the valleys of your soul

and the rivers within have frozen

when you are ever still waiting

for that tangerine warmth to surface

the mountain tops and grace your shoulders

when you feel time is not on your side

as you hear the echo of every tick and every tock

and you can’t look in the mirror because

you know it is proof of what your life has become

what could you possibly do at this point

to lift yourself from this state of nonbeing

meet that cool wind with the heat of your breath,

the breath of your soul has the power to melt glaciers within

and though you are not aware of the rapids or ripples,

your reflection radiates with the sun shining

over your river that flows within

savor the ticks and the tocks, grasp every moment

and bask in that glow of orange

if you must shatter that glass and smile

see your lips stretch from piece to piece

and your eyes twinkle in possibility

turn and the colors change just as you forever will

because though you’ve never known

you are a beautiful magic mirror

in an ever turning world

Freedom Dance

Tangled in a web of self-limitations,

she drank the wind as an afternoon cocktail

One swift gulp that burned just a teensy bit

Empowered she took another step into the raw

Song comes more easily with courage

So maybe just one swig of intention

Was what was needed to release the voice

Thwarted in the narrows of her hushed throat

Instead of swallowing more air

She unknotted her feet, leaned into the wind

And tapped her toe to its cadence

Swept away into a tango with the breeze

She let the tambourines of soul shake in the breeze

Of a blazing sun that once held her captive

She will follow the lead of her new friend

Courage to that place where the sun always shines,

Fairytales do come true, and water tastes like wine

And when the time is ripe, the tapping

Of her drums will pound with a force

That will split the moon in half

As she travels that golden road once meant for royalty

She will bow to no one, not even herself

She will sing, dance, and create the music of her spirit
