Woodland Lovers

Oh, how those trees kissed

until they melded as one

and grew to the sun.

Those forest hippies,

shaking their green tambourines,

dance in windy dreams.

Addiction

Stashed in her apron

pocket, she hands them to all

 but not without cost.

A little, then more

until it has a tight hold

on a slipping soul.

She keeps on feeding

as she watches each man fall

until he is lost

within the abyss

of a life turned dark and cold

where vice took its toll.

Fallen

Scattered, but intact

Except for a bruise or two

That show one has lived.

One must plunge to earth

To gather his wings for flight

To the depths of soul.

Birthright

When the voice rises to throat

and hands mix elixirs to heal,

I know from whom I have come

and wear this legacy as a seal.

I wonder if the chance remote

for purpose to travel the blood

of generations of the chosen some

who learn to swim in the midst of flood.

The space beneath the cardinal’s wing

melds into endless indigo skies

of heavens and worlds between

the rising notes of life’s reprise.

And that underground spring,

always flowing though no one sees,

swishes like a heartbeat between

time and spirit of you and me.

Shooting the Moon

The neighbor shouted,

Stop taking pictures of me.

I’m shooting the moon.

His nakedness falls

to the cold, wet ground as he

pulls his robe around

misconstrued calls and judgment

of his own grandeur

while I snap again

in awe at this slice of light,

truth in perfect form.

Moving

IMG_5429

In this vast word we

are but a sliver of time

that does not stand still.

When and Now…

When I was a child I thought

Children danced on angels wings.

Now that I am old I know

Our lives are the wings on which angels dance.

When I was a child I dreamed

Of unicorns, mermaids, and magical things.

Now that I am old I know

Our lives are magic left to dreams and chance.

When I was a child I thought

I’d never grow gray, frail, or old.

Now that I am old I know

In my heart I shall always remain young.

When I was a child I thought

Little was true of what I was told.

Now that I am old I know

Truth is the heartbeat of the tune I’ve sung.

When I was a child I thought

I could become anyone I dreamed.

Now that I am old I know

I really just wanted to belong.

When I was a child I thought

Life was as simple as it seemed.

Now that I am old I know

In my heart of hearts I was not wrong.
